Our Window Restoration Process

Original windows in homes built before the 1930's were most likely crafted from "first growth" wood, wood that is far superiar to currently available stock. As described previously, we are convinced the overall value of restoring these windows is superior to the cost of installing replacement windows. Here, then is a description of our restoration process:

  1. Stripping of window casings and windows.
  2. Disassembly of window units.
  3. Inspection and repair of window casings, jams, parting stops, headers and aprons.
  4. Inspection of sash and disassembly where necessary (because of weakened glue-joints, rotted wood, or some other obstruction that requires disassembly for the sake of repair).
  5. Epoxy and wood hardeners applied to restore stability to sashes and to fill gouges, holes and rotted sections.
  6. Reglazing, priming, and painting the exterior side of window.
  7. Restoration of weight-and-cord balance system with replacement of cord by sash chain and rebalancing of weights (where necessary).
  8. Stain and varnish or painting of interior side.
  9. Installation of state-of-the-art weatherstripping.
  10. Caulking of casing and storm assembly where necessary.
  11. Reassembly of window unit.

Read our comparison between window restoration and window replacement (see Restore or Replace). When original windows are properly restored, their overall value far exceeds that of replacement windows.
